FORAGERS DINNER WITH BITEHOUSE

Myself and Bryan Picard from the Bite House are collaborating for the 3rd year in a row on the Foragers Dinner Party. This event was adapted from a typical foraging event involving an outdoor field walk into an indoor fungi specimen / fancy dinner hybrid situation because of droughts preventing fungi growth. There was no one trail we could visit that would offer us much to look at. So to avoid a disappointing, dusty walk that turns up nothing, each year I go to all my favorite spots and bring the fungi to the event.

This ended up enhancing the experience as I was able to guarantee we look at something during a dry year, and a few elderly / physically limited people mentioned it allowed them to participate in looking at mushrooms. Win win! Now it is just how we do this event. The venue is the St. Ann’s Bay United Church, which is relaxed, sunny and bright.

EVENT AGENDA

  • We will convene later afternoon at 2:00pm and the fungi and I will be waiting!! Take your time and look at the fungi and their descriptions, have a beverage, pick your seats, look at books, meet new people, ask me anything.

  • Chef Picard typically serves around 5 or 6 courses which include some element of foraged or wild ingredients. Fungi is a main driver or inspiration for this event, and we often source mushrooms from Porter River Farm & Forage. The menu tends to be a surprise and the journey through each dish will take a couple hours. Beverages will be available throughout. The menu somehow gets more beautiful and interesting every year, and it is always delicious.

  • We will draw for a couple prizes throughout the event - typically these are mushroom grow kits, books, or if taking place on a good summer, baskets of freshly picked choice edibles.
