HERBALISM: PART II

Welcoming back Clinical Herbalist Erica Fraser for the second part of a series for foragers and nature lovers around Herbalism. Part I focuses on the culinary avenues to explore and consume medicinal plants. Part II focuses on the healing power and medicines made from plants. These events are designed in the context of what would interest the average forager. Someone who is thrilled to slowly unravel all the ways you can use your knowledge of plants, seaweeds and fungi to guide you when you are hungry, looking to get healthy, or both.

We will make a tincture, have a tea party, and deep dive into plants that have actions / flavors / purposes that are relevant to you. Our day will be magical but practical, and you will hopefully depart with tons of your own personal notes and inspirations, an herbal tincture, and reliable information on printed handouts. A highlight of this event will be the snacks and drinks featuring wild edibles throughout this workshop.

To see what past events are like, check them out here.

event agenda:

  • We will start this event much like Part I: Culinary - in the Welcome Garden of the North Shore Firehall. We will begin by having a little tea party, trying a couple different blends made with wild edible plants. We will talk about making medicinal brews, making blends, hot and cold brewing, methods for preserving plants for tea, etc.

  • Much of the rest of our day will be inside doing deep dives on some of the herbs we picked out in response to the below form. When you sign up, we are asking for any areas of interest or ailments you currently have so we can respond to those with the right plants. For example: perhaps you are experiencing sleep issues or menopause symptoms - we can talk specifically about this.

  • We will be making a tincture to take home during this workshop.

  • We will also go over preparations such as liniments, salves, poultice, vinegar infusions and all methods of tincturing. We will also discuss bitters and touch on syrups, ferments, infused honey etc.

  • This workshop will also touch on extraction methods and using plants for medicinal value. Learn what a decoction and double extraction is, and get to know the tools you will need in your kitchen to create herbal preparations.

  • Sipping tea at our tea party with a lunch and some snacks
